EMME는 "Equilibre Multimodal, Multimodal Equilibrium"이라는 프랑스어와 영어의 약자로 1970년대 후반 몬트리올 대학교(the University of Montreal)의 교통연구센터(the Center for Research on Transportation, CRT)에서 실험적 코드로 개발되었다. 이후 CRT에서는 1980년대 초반 EMME/2를 개발하였고, 1986년부터 캐나다의 INRO 社가 이어서 개발하기 시작하였다. Emme는 다중교통수단 통행 예측모형(the multimodal travel forecasting models)을 이용한 네트워크 평형 이론(the theory of network equilibrium)을 구현하는 교통분석 도구로, 최근 INRO 社에서는 EMME/2와 Enif의 엔진을 하나의 패키지로 통합한 Emme 3를 발표하였다.1
INRO 社는 Emme 3 설치 CD 내에 HTML(Hypertext Markup Language)과 PDF(Portable Document Format) 형식의 매뉴얼을 제공하였는데 이 매뉴얼은 다음과 같이 총 6가지로 구성되어 있다.

- Installation Notes: Emme 3.0
- Welcome to Emme 3
- Emme User's Guide
- Emme Reference Manual
- Emme Prompt Manual Release 3.0
이 매뉴얼은 Emme 3 프로그램 내의 도움말(help)을 통해 볼 수 있고, CD를 통해 제공되는 HTML과 PDF 파일 역시 자체적으로 링크되어 있어 사용하는 데에 큰 어려움이 없도록 되어 있다. 하지만, 제본을 하여 매뉴얼을 이용하려면 어떤 PDF 파일에 어떤 내용이 있는지를 알아야 한다. 기타 매뉴얼은 모두 하나의 파일로 구성되어 어려움이 없지만 프롬프트 콘솔(prompt console)의 사용법을 다룬 'Emme Prompt Manual Release 3.0'의 경우 총 86개의 파일로 구성되어 있어 파일을 구분하기 쉽지 않다.
따라서 본 포스트에서는 Emme 3의 각 매뉴얼 파일을 정리하여 목록을 만들었으며 그 목록은 아래와 같다.
